Concert of my Life

Pats posts stuff sometimes, mostly reblogs and likes other posts, usually cats or important issues but often pop culture too.

Some personally written posts are big blog post style, so a "Read More" link is used to shorten posts for browser feeds. (sorry mobile users)

I write a lot about social/political/world issues and you may or may not agree with my opinions. I am not and do not claim to be an expert on any of the topics, and am only presenting my thoughts formed from knowledge gained through research or school. Feel free to let me know what you think, I am always open to new ideas and perspectives.

It’s one of those little things that you don’t realize until later, but honestly, if it weren’t for Professor Shah’s Women’s Studies 50a class nearly four years ago, I wouldn’t have dived so deep into feminist theory for the four years since. It was an intro-intro class, 100+ students, many (like myself) just trying to fulfill their humanities general ed requirement. But Professor Shah presented intersectional, transnational feminism in such a critical yet accessible way that I just had to learn more, and here I am now graduating with a Women’s Studies Minor.

It’s a terrible shame upon this university that they would push an educator like Professor Shah out, but at least it’s obvious she had a tremendous impact while teaching at uci.

Please read this very important article that has quotes and words from black students at UCI.

To: University of California, Irvine Administration, its affiliates, and the general public

My name is Dominic A. Dickinson and I am a currently a first year at the University of California, Irvine. On January 18, 2013 the offenders by the name of Joseph Baek and Tracie Martinez committed an act of violence in the form of Racial Harassment. The Words “Nigger/Nigga” where said around me multiple times. I have asked both of the offenders to stop using the n word at one point, however it has continued for a whole quarter. As a result of this, I had to move out of my freshmen dorm in middle earth and have been tossed around by the UCI administration more than 30 times. I believe that every person regardless of gender, race, national origin, religion, age, marital status, sexual orientation or disability should feel safe and comfortable wherever they choose to live because we all should get the same opportunity to succeed without any acts of discrimination. I, Dominic Dickinson believe that the UC Irvine Student Housing be held accountable because these incidents happen every single year and they refer to these racial harassment incidents as “rare”. During winter quarter, several black freshman students had to move out of their dorms in both the Mesa and Middle Earth communities.  Often times, freshman students have nowhere to go because their RA’s (Resident Advisors) have limited training. Resident Advisors are hired to carry out Chancellor Michael Drake Pillars of Excellence (academic excellence, research excellence, leadership excellence and character excellence). If racial harassment incidents are happening every year in the housing communities than it is the housing staffs responsibility to reslove these issues. The housing staff says that they are “investigating” these incidents; however they are swept under the rug. In conclusion, I Dominic Dickinson will continue to work with the Black Student Union at UC Irvine to help end Anti Blackness incidents on the UC Irvine Campus.

    Respectfully Signed,

    Dominic Dickinson (05/19/13)

ok so I was misinformed about the student being Nigerian, which is my own fault (I couldn’t find any other articles last night after my parents told me) but yeah, this happened.

"Thomas Parham, the vice president of student affairs, said there is ‘no place on this campus you can go where we do not celebrate and promote the notion of diversity that is here.

'Is it a issue with us?” he said. “The answer is no.' “

Well, that explains why administration has done absolutely nothing about anti-black racism at UCI. The top Student Affairs administrator doesn’t even believe there is a problem.

my cousin took this picture at UC Irvine today.
a non-Muslim student holding an umbrella for the three Muslim students praying in the rain.

I believe the student holding the umbrella is actually Muslim, too. The comments on the original facebook post of this picture in response to someone asking why the student isn’t praying: “^he already prayed. This is after the general Jama’ah” Doesn’t make the picture any less beautiful though! It shows how wonderful the people in our MSU are. :) I remember going “aww!” when I saw it on my newsfeed when it was first posted haha.

UC Irvine’s Associated Students Legislative Council, composed of representatives elected from each academic school, has just unanimously passed with a vote of 16-0-0 in favor of legislation that calls on UCI and the UC to divest from companies that directly supply the military hardware, checkpoint enforcement technology, and occupation machinery/resources used by Israel to maintain the apartheid and occupation conditions in Palestine.
