Concert of my Life

The Life and Tumbls of Patrick of the Bubble aka Irvine. You'll find Rants, Links, but mostly information about me and my opinions.

Many posts are big blog post style, so a "Read More" link is used to shorten posts for feeds.

Some of my posts will be emotional or controversial. Always refer to the "Read More" sentence. Thanks.

I write a lot about social/political/world issues and you may or may not agree with my opinions. I am not and do not claim to be an expert on any of the topics, and am only presenting my thoughts formed from knowledge gained through research or school. Feel free to let me know what you think, I am always open to new ideas and perspectives.

What I've been defined by in the past few years: Marching Band, SPOP, Whispering Wood, UCI

So I’m sitting here at Starbucks, just working on some school stuff when I can’t help but overhear the conversation happening at the table next to me. The guy who is with the girl asks her if she liked UCI and if UCI was her first choice…and her attitude turned hostile as she professed how much she hated UCI. And even though she’s a complete stranger, I can’t help but feel defensive. Yeah, maybe UCI isn’t a fancy schmancy brand-name college, but if you make the decision to go here, then try to make the best of it. I personally believe that coming into school with a flippant, angry attitude won’t get anyone far…hating the college you go to won’t allow you to make the most of your college experience. If you really want out, there’s always the option of transferring. But if you decide to stay, then be grateful to be here.

I feel like this is one of the benchmarks I kept in mind for SPOP. Because some of the best stories to come out of that experience, for me and others, was how many people came to orientation with a pretty low or indifferent opinion of UCI, but came out of orientation with excitement and eager to be an Anteater. Obviously not everyone had the most magical time at orientation, but I rest easy knowing how many people’s lives were affected for the positive by that experience.
